For
the
past
twenty-two
years,
The
Advocates'
Society
Journal
has
played
a
unique
role
in
legal education
in
Ontario.
As a
publication dedicated
to
informing
advocates,
it has
brought together
the
ideas
of our
leading
legal
minds
to
provide experienced
and
insightful views
on
both
advoca-
cy
and
advocates. Indeed,
the
Journal
has
provided
a
veritable "how
to"
for
the
practice
of
advocacy
before courts
and
tribunals.
The
idea
of the
Journal
originated
in
1981
with
the
Publications
Committee
of The
Advocates'
Society,
under
the
chair
of
Brian J.E.
Brock,
Q.C.
The
Society
is
indebted
to
those
who
have
nurtured
its
development
by
contributing
the
ideas,
the
enthusiasm,
and the
editori-
al
skills
to
make
it a
readable
and
informative publication. This volume,
which brings together
the
"best articles
on
advocacy
...
ever,"
is a
reflec-
tion
of
their
foresight, dedication,
and
hard work.
In
this
regard
we owe
a
debt
of
gratitude
to
Moishe Reiter, Q.C.
(Editor,
1982-90),
Anthony
Keith,
Q.C. (Publications Committee
Chair/Managing
Editor,
1982-90),
Brian
J.E.
Brock,
Q.C.
(Editorial
Board,
1982-89),
Mark
G.
Appel,
Q.C.
(Advertising
Editor,
1984-90),
David
Stockwood,
Q.C.
(Editor,
1991
to
the
present), Stuart Forbes, Q.C. (Managing Editor
1991-95),
and
Paul
Le
Vay
(Managing Editor,
1995
to the
present).
In
particular,
David
Stockwood
has
been
the
guiding
force
for
many years, inspiring
the
foremost
judges, advocates,
and
scholars
of the day to
contribute
to the
