Examinations in Civil Trials:
Use of This Handbook
   tools to persuade decision
makers. To be eective, lawyers should present a consist-
ent face to their audiences. is was the central message
in the Young Advocates Series’s other handbooks, such as
Legal Writing and Case Analysis.
Examinations (both direct and cross) are applications
of case analysis principles. Before counsel asks a question,
there has to be a thorough analysis:
What goals are there to accomplish?
Why ask any questions at all?
Why ask this particular question?
How will the answer lead to other questions?
What are the choices?
What are the risks?
