Scope Corporate law in Canada is governed by both federal legislation (such as the Canada Business Corporations Act, R.S.C. 1985, c. C-44) and applicable provincial legislation (such as the Company Act, R.S.B.C. 1996, c. 62, for British Columbia companies), depending on whether the company is incorporated or does business federally or provincially. Partnership law in Canada is closely modelled on English law as reflected in various provincial partnership statutes. Corporate and partnership law often involve issues of commercial law, which includes aspects of contract law and competition law (each discussed above in this chapter as a separate topic) and personal property security law (discussed below as a separate topic). Charities and not-for-profit corporations are discussed above as a separate topic.
